How to Make a Rose From Scratch

roses shadows

I crouch
in dry grass
hear the wind in the cedar
and frogs that sound like crickets

I see
bees with pollen on their feet
hover over basil and lavender

I feel
soil between my toes
and remember your fingers
digging without gloves.

I notice
how the time goes
how the people who I love grow old

I dream
of a garden that does not fade.
